Epson R2400 Watercolor paper grayed out
Headshot Photography Los Angeles
The other day I changed the Photo Black Ink for my Epson 2400 to Matt Black. I wanted to print one of my projects on watercolor paper. Unlike the old 2200, the 2400 does not require you to delete the printer from the printer list, turn off the printer, turn on the printer and re-add the printer again. Instead, the 2400 only requires that you “confirm” the new ink. On a Mac, all you have to do is go to the Printer Setup Utility, select the Stylus Photo R2400 from the list and click on Utility button. Then, click the Epson Status Monitor and click on the black ink cartridge to verify the new ink.
If after you have verified your ink, you are still unable to print on the appropriate paper, then Epson doesn’t make it easy to figure out why. When I went to print on Watercolor paper, the paper profile would show up (under “printer profile” when you hit print), however when I continued to print, and went to “print settings”, the watercolor paper was grayed out under “media type”. It took me a while to figure it out. Turns out that the printer driver the 2400 was printing from was somehow incorrect. Once I downloaded the correct driver, I was able to see all the media types in the drop down!

I am having exactly the same problem.
The watercolour paper profile is grayed out.
Please can you tell me what printer driver you are using.
I have being trying all day to upload new printer drivers without success. I am running Mac OSX 4.8
Just read your treatise on why photographers should not be asked to give up their RAW images – I totally agree and never do it. I may point people to your well written essay. Thanks.
My comment is really about my frustration in getting various paper types to be available for my R2400. I think we were seeing the same thing. I just added a mac to my suite of computers, my first one. I switched cartridges from PK to MK but the Velvet Fine Art paper is grayed out in my Print dialog box. I have downloaded all the appropriate ICC profiles from Epson and the latest driver (6.57). Going into the Epson StatusMonitor from the Printer Utility3 app, I can see the graphic of the various cartridges. Clicking on the black cartridge icon the information balloon comes up and correctly identifies it as Matte Black.
Printing – in my print dialog box, the printer profile is set to SPR2400 Velvet Fine Art (I’m using CS4 by the way). I click print and get the Epson driver dialog box. Under Print Settings I click on Media Type and still the Velvet Fine Art Paper choice is grayed out.
You indicated that using the proper driver fixed your problem. I have the latest, having downloaded it twice tonight. I’m stumped, and work is backing up.
If you can follow this convoluted story and it makes sense to you, I’m hoping you can point me in a profitable direction.
Best regards,
Bruce
Hi,
Sorry you are having trouble as well! Epson drivers can be fickle. It was so long ago, I’m going on a vague memory of how I ended up with the correct driver. I’m also using CS4 and the driver that eventually working for me is the Epson SP R2400 (1). I had initially downloaded a similar one which I thought was the correct driver, but it gave me grayed out papers. On my second try, this was the one that worked. Hope this helps.
I am having the same problem. I am using Photoshop CS5 on my MacBook Pro. I have OS 10.5. My Epson R2400 will not recognize watercolor paper as a printing choice. I have verified the matt black is recognized using the printer setup utility. I downloaded latest driver 6.57. Any suggestions?
Hi Richard,
Is the option grayed out under “print settings” or does it not show up at all?
